May

Flores

Flores by Farl.
The month of May is the season of one of the most colorful Philippine festivals, the Flores de Mayo or Santacruzan. Almost every town, rich or poor, hold this streat pageant where town belles, selected for their beauty and for their embodiment of traditional feminine qualities, to parade with their handsome escorts under the hand-carried bamboo archs adorned by fragrant native flowers.

This religious parade is done at dusk in the last day of May and the local beauties are arranged in a specific order representing at least 18 different titles of the Virgin Mary, starting with Reina Banderada. The 3 most beautiful maidens are chosen to close the procession: the Reina de las Virgines, the Reina de las Flores (pictured here) and finally Reina Elena escorted by her son, Constantine.

this photo of the replica of the the Reina de las Flores (or the Nuestra Señora de las Flores) was taken from the Marian exhibit in Cebu City, the Philippines
